Statehood Day is celebrated in remembrance of February 15, 1804, when the First Serbian Uprising was launched under the leadership of Karađorđe, marking the beginning of the struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule. Additionally, on this date in 1835, the Sretenje Constitution was adopted—one of the most progressive constitutions of its time—which laid the foundations of modern Serbian statehood.
Statehood Day is one of the most important national holidays in the Republic of Serbia, symbolizing the aspiration toward freedom, sovereignty, and democratic values.
